About
We build AI software for California workers’ compensation
Amber Legal is built by Amber AI Labs, Inc., an AI software company based in Santa Monica, California. Amber is an AI agent for California workers’ compensation law firms — a web application that firms sign into and use every day, not a consultancy, a staffing service, or a document vendor.
What we’re building
Amber is an AI agent, not a chatbot. The difference matters. A chatbot answers questions about text you paste into it. Amber maintains an understanding of each case and works across the systems a firm already uses — documents, email, and case management — to actually carry out legal workflows.
In practice, that means Amber:
- Processes and reads incoming case documents as they arrive
- Processes case-related email and files it to the right matter
- Maintains the current state of every case as new records land
- Extracts medical and litigation facts from the record
- Builds medical timelines and record summaries
- Tracks QME panels, strike deadlines, and evaluation dates
- Tracks statutory deadlines and surfaces the next action
- Drafts correspondence and legal work product from firm templates
- Prepares demand and settlement materials
AI is foundational to the product rather than a feature bolted onto it. Reading a 400-page medical record, deciding what changed, and drafting the letter that follows is not work that rules-based software can do.
The problem we’re solving
A California workers’ compensation case generates an enormous volume of paper — medical reports, panel notices, carrier correspondence, benefit notices, deposition transcripts. The work of reading it, knowing what it changed, and acting before a statutory deadline runs is what limits how many cases a firm can carry. Firms answer that constraint by hiring, which is slow and expensive.
We think that constraint is a software problem. Amber takes on the document work so the same team can carry more cases, with attorney review on everything that goes out the door.
Why California workers’ comp first
We deliberately started narrow. California workers’ compensation has its own forms, its own statutory clocks, and its own procedural rules — DWC-1 applications, QME panels and strike windows, PR-2 reports, MMI and permanent disability ratings, Labor Code §4600 designations. A general-purpose legal AI handles none of that specifically. Doing one jurisdiction properly is worth more to a workers’ comp firm than doing fifty shallowly.
How we make money
Amber is sold as a subscription to law firms. Pricing starts at $1,500 per month per firm — less than 35% the cost of a full-time case manager.
